THE FIVE REFUGES

All Buddhists take refuge in the Three Jewels of the Awakened One, the Eternal Teaching, and the Faith Community. In the Amida School we do so in three ways. We take refuge in the Three Jewels as Amida; as Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and as the Pure Land. The following is, therefore, the refuge formula of the Amida School:
    I take Refuge in Amida
    Namo Amitabhaya

I take Refuge in the Buddha
    Namo Buddhaya

I take Refuge in the Dharma
    Namo Dharmaya

I take Refuge in the Sangha
    Namo Sanghaya

I take Refuge in the Pure Land
    Namo Buddhakshetraya
This is, for obvious reasons, loosely referred to as the “Five Refuges” or “Fivefold Refuge”, though doctrinally it is simply a Pureland way of understanding and appreciating the Three Jewels and establishing them at the core of ones life in a multi-dimensional way.
