The Somme Estuary

by Prasada Caroline Brazier

White cows, mud-gaitered
Grazing creek crossed salt marshes
Need not perfection
Sky and poplars don't expect
Keeping up appearances.

Flats expand far out
Across the bay of beige sand
Watery streams wander
A dust of gulls along the shore
Lone figures, man and dog, walk.

Out to the distance
Van Gogh hay wheels in a field
Morning haze lifting
The chip man cuts potatoes
In the press behind his van
